Toward the end of my certification classes I recall the instructor mentioning dive insurance. "I don't need dive insurance," I thought, "because my wife has an excellent medical plan." I assumed dangerous sports like bungee-jumping would give my insurance provider a reason to deny coverage, but scuba diving? Many health insurance providers consider scuba diving a dangerous activity and won't cover you for injuries incurring while diving.
Perhaps they may pay for treatment of minor cuts and scrapes but a scuba diving accident can involve so much more: specialized evacuation and airlift, recompression chamber treatment, even trip cancellation or extension.
Fortunately dive insurance isn't expensive and is offered by no less than five companies with plans ranging from $25 to $265 a year. Plans from DAN and PADI seem the most popular but assess the benefits of each and purchase the one which best suits your needs. For example, in a Divester story last year, we pointed out an important diference between plans is the maximum depth they cover. Many plans assume a recreational dive limit (130 feet) but others don't impose one (great for tech divers). Other things to look for include breathing gases, per-incident limits, and additional medical coverage. |

| Wouldn't leave home without it. Personaly I have the DAN Preferred plan, for $99 bucks a year it's well worth it for the piece of mind. |

Insurance yeah well good thing. Does anybody know an Int. Insurcance which will take me as a diving german PADI Instructor for illnesses and deseases as like broken arms, old teeth, ear problems, lenses etc... just a normal healthplan no DCI?

hmm, i dont know about your teeth, but dan europes pro plan is pretty good, friends of mine had all kind of stuff non diving related and it was usually taken care of by dan without complications, i guess it would be worth looking into. as for teeth - i guess if you can blame it on an accident with your dentist - it might be covered  . but thats just a thought. |

yep, looking for just that myself.
I heard that dan takes care of this through "travel assist", but i'm not sure how this works. any personal experiences anyone?
also i read in a recent issue of "unterwasser" (german diving mag), that there are other insurers which offer even better coverage than dan for roughly the same price. i'll have to find this issue again and will post details... |

chamber costs: 15.000
death: 5.000
liability insurance: 3.500.000
cost: 129 euro/year

liability insurance (upgradeable): 1.550.000

not complete, just the basic idea. all in all, DAN plus a normal traveller's insurance looks like the best option to me... |

| yeah-Aqua Med is good stuff..., can recomend this insurance as well..., almost the same like the DAN for pros!!! |

i had exactly the same problem... If you are longer than 5 years outside of Germany, you will not be able to get insurance from a german health insurance company.
In case it's less than 5 years try the DKV which is really cheap!
Should it be longer than 5 years, you will have to work (wherever you work) legally in order to get either a private health insurance (damn expensive) or a health benefit plan from your employer
