There are many models to choose from depending on your needs and the type of diving that you are doing. Well, look no further, I give you another model to think about: a Russian DPV on eBay.

The Russian Military produced some incredible dive gear during the Cold War, including rebreathers, scooters and diving suits. Due to the collapse of the USSR and the global reach of the Internet, most of these items have ended up on eBay.

This DPV, the Protei-5, is typical of the Russian equipment, it runs on special batteries, includes all spare parts/tools and weighs in at an impressive 160 lbs. You better hit the gym if you plan on taking this on a dive boat.

One person has described this as "something that resembles Maria the Robot from Fritz Lang's Metropolis" and I'd have to agree.

Just imagine trying to import this thing, it looks like a weapon. However, if you must, it's only $1500,plus shipping from Latvia.

The Protei-5 is a small Russian one-man diver-carrying vehicle often used by Russian commando frogmen, maximum speed is 4 knots. It is battery electric powered. The batteries are an expensive type that contain silver. It clips on under the diver with a clip over each shoulder and one between his legs. Its casing is aluminium. It was intended to be clipped onto the outside of a submarine; near the operation site the frogmen would airlock out underwater and unhitch their Protei 5's and ride them to the operation site.

The rod sticking out of the front end was meant to carry a lamp.
The lever on the left bow is the motor's on/off switch. There is no speed control.
The frogman steers by moving his legs about.

This item is not used, and weights 72 kgs.
