This week, in attempt to promote awareness of and raise money for whales, the World Society for the Protection of Animals began auctioning the "rights" to a whale's life on eBay. Hoping to raise $180,000 -- the "street value" of a fin whale -- the Society hopes to pay this sum to Icelandic hunters, and in exchange, the hunters will release one whale. WSPA worries that whalers may refuse to accept money raised this way; if the whalers refuse the money, WSPA says it will put the money raised towards anti-whaling campaigns.
Want to get involved? Interested parties will be able to pledge sums of 10GBP ($19) or more. WSPA's campaigns director Leah Garces claims that, if enough money is raised, "the message will be strong enough; that there's international condemnation, it's cruel and the public are against it." Go ahead. Send a message.
